Less than a day after the election of the first female president, a Mexican mayor was killed
According to reports, a female Mexican mayor was shot 19 times before she was slain.
Yolanda Sanchez, the female mayor of the Mexican town of Cotija, was shot and killed by gunmen. She was shot following a gunman’s ambush in the heart of Cotija, Michoacán. According to reports, she was shot 19 times and passed away soon after in the hospital. Also slain was her bodyguard.
Less than a day has passed since the election of Mexico’s first female president. An election marred by widespread acts of violence.
Since taking office in September 2021, Sanchez has been the governor of Cotija. It has been alleged that Sanchez has received death threats.
During a journey to the neighboring state of Jalisco in 2023, she was kidnapped at gunpoint and detained by armed men for three days. Before releasing her, the lawmaker claimed that the kidnappers had made “demands” and subjected her to “psychological terror.” She claimed not to know what criminal organization they were associated with, but local media reported that the Jalisco New Generation cartel (CJNG) was the most likely culprit.
The CJNG is involved in narcotics trafficking as well as kidnapping for extortion and ransom.
They also go after public servants who decline to carry out their orders.
According to Ms. Sánchez, the guys who had intimidated her upon taking office had asked that she turn over town security to state police officers who work for organized crime groups. Following the event, she received armed bodyguards.
Despite the fact that no one has been taken into custody in relation to the incident, it is generally believed that the gunmen were members of an organized crime group.
