Iwobi wants to break more EPL records

Alex Iwobi, an offensive midfielder for Fulham, is aiming to maintain his record of breaking John Obi Mikel’s record for minutes played in the Premier League.

When the Cottagers played in their 1-0 loss to Newcastle on April 6, the Arsenal youth product played in the top tier of English football for the record 16,289 minutes—more than any other Nigerian.

In his tenth season in the Premier League, Iwobi overtook the former Super Eagles player who had set the record during Mikel’s 11-year tenure at Chelsea.

At the end of the 2023–24 season, the 28-year-old had accrued 16,808 minutes of play time, with five goals and two assists in 30 appearances for Marco Silva’s team.

Iwobi also passed Mikel in terms of games played (253) and is now aiming to pass Shola Ameobi, who currently owns the record with 299 appearances for the Magpies and Crystal Palace.

“I know it’s crazy that I broke Mikel’s record, but I’m not stopping.” Whoever is going to challenge me for that championship has to work hard, and I’m trying to build that and keep going,” he said to KISS Fresh.

Given that John Obi Mikel is a gaming legend, that is a significant accomplishment. I feel older knowing that I’ve played with him. At one point, he was literally my idol. He is a legendary figure.
