LEVERKUSEN: Xabi Alonso provides an explanation for why Victor Boniface has not yet become a consistent starter after his return from injury

Xabi Alonso, the manager of Bayer Leverkusen, provided an explanation for the limited playing time of Nigerian forward Victor Boniface since his comeback from injury in April.

The 22-year-old’s progress in his first season with Leverkusen in Germany was abruptly interrupted in December due to a groin injury, just as he was making a significant impression.

Victor Boniface was forced to give up his aspiration of participating in his inaugural AFCON tournament with Nigeria in Ivory Coast, where the Super League made it to the final but ultimately lost to the host nation.

Thus far, he successfully recovered from his injury last month, however, he has not regained his position as a starter under Xabi Alonso, despite his good performances as a replacement.

During his pre-Europa League final press conference on Tuesday, the Spanish coach was asked to provide an explanation for his handling of the Nigerian star.

His response was: “That is an excellent inquiry.” According to Alonso, it is certain that following an injury, it requires a certain amount of time for recovery. Additionally, the team has a large squad consisting of numerous players, all of whom are eager to participate in the game.

“I appreciate it when someone who is not currently playing demonstrates their character to prove to me, as their coach, that I made a mistake by not putting them on the field.” That is the task that a professional must face.

“I am satisfied with Boni.” The influence he has exerted on us has been highly beneficial, and we are reciprocating by assisting him in getting back on course. However, he emphasized that we are content with him, and this sentiment applies specifically to individuals from Nigeria.

Victor Boniface has achieved an impressive record this season, scoring 21 goals and contributing 10 assists in 33 matches across all competitions. Furthermore, his team has won the Bundesliga title without suffering any defeats, with just the Europa League match against Atalanta and the German Cup remaining.
