DFL Bundesliga Player of the Season: Wirtz of Leverkusen

The German Football League (DFL) organized a poll to select the Bundesliga Player of the Season 2023–24, and Florian Wirtz of undefeated champion Bayer Leverkusen won.

The 21-year-old playmaker Wirtz defeated teammates Victor Boniface and Alejandro Grimaldo of Leverkusen as well as Serhou Guirassy and Deniz Undav of league runners-up VfB Stuttgart, according to a statement released by the DFL on Monday.

All DFL Player of the Month winners were eligible to vote in the season. The only player to win three times in this vote (in October, December, and February) was Wirtz.

For Wirtz, who is also anticipated to excel for Germany at the next European Championship on home soil, it is the first honor of this kind.

“Wirtz has shown this season – his first full campaign since recovering from the ACL injury he suffered in 2022 – that he has it all,” the NFL stated.

“He’s come to be the complete package at the heart of the action, capable of dribbling, distributing, covering ground and also boasting a nippy turn of pace.”

With 11 goals, 11 assists, and a league-high six attempts that were saved by the crossbar or post, Wirtz led Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title in spectacular manner. They were also the first team to finish the entire season without losing.

If they defeat second-tier Kaiserslautern on Saturday in the German Cup final and Atalanta on Wednesday in the Europa League final, they would also have completed a treble.

Should they succeed, they will become the inaugural European squad to remain unbeaten in every competition for the whole season since the introduction of continental matches in the mid-1950s. Their current 51-game unbeaten streak from 2023–24 sets a record for Europe.
