According to the CEO, Qatar Airways would invest in a southern African airline

As part of its effort to increase the size of its network in Africa, Qatar Airways’ CEO announced on Wednesday that the Gulf carrier will shortly announce an investment in a southern African airline.

During a panel discussion at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha, Badr Mohammed Al Meer stated, “We are at the final stage of an equity investment in an airline in the southern part of Africa.” The agreement might be made public in two to three weeks.

The southern portion of Africa, according to Meer, who took over as CEO in November, represents a vacuum in Qatar Airways’ network coverage on the continent.

In order to increase connectivity, he continued, Qatar Airways hopes to see its partner airlines’ fleets in Africa grow.

2019 saw Qatar Airways purchase a 60% part in a new international airport worth $1.3 billion being constructed in Rwanda. Qatar Airways also enjoys code share arrangements with a number of African airlines, including Rwandair.

Speaking in Doha, Rwandair CEO Yvonne Manzi Makolo indicated that the airport might be integrated in 2027–2028.
