The president of Peru is being investigated over a family scandal

The dissolution of a special police squad that was investigating the president of Peru’s brother is being investigated.

The dissolution of a special police squad tasked with looking into President Dina Boluarte’s brother, Nicanor Boluarte, who was arrested earlier in the day, has sparked a formal investigation by Peruvian authorities, marking a dramatic change of events.

The president’s attorney and Nicanor Boluarte were taken into custody as a part of an investigation into possible influence peddling. The pressure on the troubled leader, who is already being scrutinized for dubious purchases of luxury goods like pricy Rolex watches and jewelry, is only going to increase in light of this most recent discovery.

The attorney general’s office in Peru is heading the inquiry, which is centered on possible abuses of power by President Boluarte and Interior Minister Walter Ortiz about their roles in disbanding the police unit. During a government briefing earlier today, Attorney General Juan Carlos Villena underlined the gravity of the situation and demanded the unit’s prompt reinstatement.

Dramatic searches on over 20 houses took place during the day, including Nicanor Boluarte’s Lima home. Boluarte is accused of directing a criminal network that swayed important government appointments. Authorities simultaneously raided the residence of President Mateo Castaneda’s attorney, who is representing the president in the continuing probe into purported unlawful enrichment.

Boluarte has fiercely denied any involvement, but the justice department has mandated that he and the other unidentified suspects stay in preliminary detention for ten days.

Nicanor Boluarte insisted on his innocence and denied any misconduct as he was led to a courthouse. “I’m not guilty… I vehemently refute everything,” he declared.

The current crisis serves as a stark reminder of how unstable Peru’s political system is due to widespread corruption and ongoing instability. The Andean nation, which has faced six presidents in as many years and is currently facing deep-seated governance issues that jeopardize its democratic roots, is at a crossroads. It is also facing an ongoing cycle of corruption investigations and impeachments.
