Argentines Oppose Cuts to Public Spending and Demand Review from Unions

President Milei of Argentina denounced a walkout against public spending, claiming his administration had already given the unions numerous concessions.

The majority of Argentina has been impacted by a nationwide strike protesting cuts to public spending, with many stores, banks, and schools being closed.

On Thursday, there was a limited bus service available but train and metro services were suspended.

Hector Daher, a prominent union leader, stated that President Javier Milei needed to wake up after the 24-hour strike.

He should reconsider some of the reductions to social programs and subsidies, Daher pleaded.

Since taking office in December, right-wing economist Milei has been enacting severe austerity measures.

He claims that in order to lower Argentina’s public deficit and manage the nation’s extraordinarily high inflation rate—which approaches 300% annually—he is taking the appropriate steps.

The president denounced the walkout, claiming his administration had already given the unions numerous concessions.
