Scotland’s First Minister Yousaf Is Thinking About Stepping Down Due to Fears About the Confidence Vote

According to UK media, Humza Yousaf, the First Minister of Scotland, is thinking about resigning rather than face two confidence votes.

According to UK media late on Sunday, Humza Yousaf, the First Minister of Scotland, is thinking about resigning rather than face two confidence votes.

As per a source close to the minister, Yousaf’s resignation is still on the table, but a decision has not been made yet.

Senior party figures have approached former leader of the Scottish National Party John Swinney about taking over as First Minister in the event that Yousaf is removed from office. But Swinney supposedly hesitates because of private matters.

Yousaf’s turbulent journey came to a head last week when he said that he intended to challenge a vote of no confidence that his political opponents had sparked by his decision to leave a coalition agreement and try to lead with a minority government.

In an interview on Friday, Yousaf stated, “I’m quite confident, very confident in fact, that I’ll be able to win that vote of no confidence.”

If Yousaf loses, there is a 28-day period within which a new First Minister can be chosen by parliament before an election is required.
