According to NAFDAC, Nestle Infant Milk with Sugar Additive is not sold in Nigeria

NAFDAC has explained why Nestle Nido and Cerelac aren’t available in Nigerian shops and has emphasized that they follow stringent guidelines for baby food regulations.

The Nestle Nido follow-up milk formula brand and Cerelac, which is meant for use in newborns, are not goods that are currently in circulation in Nigeria, according to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

This is happening against the backdrop of news stories in the media that claim Nestle, the biggest consumer goods corporation in the world, violates international norms meant to prevent obesity and chronic diseases by adding sugar and honey to newborn milk and cereal items marketed in many developing nations.

However, NAFDAC stated that it upholds legal requirements for baby food items offered for sale in the nation.

The public was reassured in a statement by NAFDAC’s resident media consultant, Sanya Olutayo, that the organization takes all necessary precautions to ensure that foods for infants and young children are registered, distributed, and consumed in Nigeria in accordance with applicable regulations.

The statement read, “The management of NAFDAC wishes to use this medium to reassure the public that the agency registers foods for infants and young children that are distributed and used in Nigeria in accordance with applicable Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) and Codex Alimentarius international food standards (Codex).”

This applies to all product categories for infants and young children that are sold by Nigerian producers, importers, and marketers of baby and young child food.

“It is imperative that children have adequate and optimal nutrition during their infancy and early childhood to support their healthy growth and development to the fullest extent possible.
