Ahly makes CAFCL semifinal history

Al Ahly, who continue to rule African football, secured a berth in the 2024 CAF Champions League this past weekend, while Mamelodi Sundowns, the dominant team in the Premier Soccer League, lost to Espérance Sportive de Tunis in the semifinals.

Al Ahly and TP Mazembe had an overall score of 0-0 going into the Cairo International Stadium. However, the Egyptian team won their second-leg semi-final match against the Congolese powerhouses thanks to goals from Mohamed Abdelmonem, Wessam Ali, and Akram Tawfik.

As a result, the Red Devils made history by being the first team to ever advance to the CAF Champions League final for five straight seasons.

In their second-leg match on Friday night, ES Tunis defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 at Loftus Versfeld in South Africa.

Despite the Brazilians’ domination throughout the 90 minutes, Raed Bouchniba’s goal in the 57th minute separated the two teams on the night, even if the game was temporarily suspended due to inclement weather.

Even though Masandawana didn’t win the CAF Champions League, they nevertheless won a ticket in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup 2025. Along with ES Tunis, the Tshwanese team qualified through the ranking process, and the most recent CAF Champions League champions, Al Ahly and Wydad AC, secured their spots in the competition.
