Investigation Into Dana Air Runway Incident in Lagos Started by NSIB

According to the NSIB, there was a lot of rain, which made the runway where the Dana Airplane skidded off wet.

The investigation into the Tuesday morning runway incident involving a Dana Airline McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft that skidded off the runway at the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos has begun, according to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).

The incident happened around past 9:00 am local time, according to a statement from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji. According to preliminary fact-finding, the Dana Airlines flight 9J0352 (registration number 5N-BKI), which was carrying 83 passengers and six crew members, left Abuja at 8:20 am local time and arrived in Lagos at around 9:20 am.

The NSIB reported that there was a lot of rain at the time of the occurrence, and runway 18L was damp.

Thankfully, no fatalities or injuries have been recorded. Following the incident, MMA temporarily closed Runway 18L as a precaution.

The Director General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., declared, “We have commenced an investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the runway incursion event involving Dana Airline MD-83 aircraft with registration marking 5N-BKI.”

But according to a statement from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the plane went off the runway and the nosewheel (landing gear) came to rest on the grass when it landed at MMIA.

However, it noted that at the time Runway 18L was closed, all passengers and crew exited and were safely evacuated.

“The NCAA restates its declared dedication to a secure and safe aviation industry. As part of its commitment, the Authority will conduct its own internal safety assessment of the incident and look to implement the safety recommendations that came from the NSIB investigation, according to the NCAA statement that was signed by Captain Chris Najomo, acting director general.

Dana Air, however, had earlier reported that one of its planes had gone off the runway.

“Dana Air regrets to notify the public of an incident that occurred today, April 23, 24. It involved one of our aircraft, registration number 5N BKI, which was traveling from Abuja to Lagos.

We are happy to report that all 83 passengers and staff members on board the flight safely exited and experienced no injuries or scares thanks to the crew’s exceptional professionalism in handling the issue.

The aircraft involved has been grounded by our maintenance team pending more investigation, and we have also provided updates on the incident to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Safety and Investigation Bureau (NSIB).

“We would like to express our deepest apologies and gratitude to the passengers on the impacted flight for their patience and understanding, as well as our gratitude to the airport authorities and our crew for their very quick response in ensuring the safe disembarkation of all passengers following the event.

“We want our passengers to know that their safety is our first priority and that we are fully assisting the appropriate authorities in their investigation into the incident’s circumstances.”

In addition, Dana Air added that it has apologized deeply to every passenger impacted by the recent interruption in schedule caused by an aircraft that was involved in a runway excursion at the Lagos airport.
