Two Navy helicopters collide during a military practice in Malaysia, leaving ten people dead

Ten people were killed when two navy helicopters crashed in midair during a military exercise in Lumut, Malaysia.

A terrifying mid-air collision between two navy helicopters during a military exercise for a Royal Malaysian Navy parade has claimed the lives of ten people.

The heartbreaking scene was captured on local television footage when one helicopter’s rotor touched another’s, sending both of them rushing toward the ground.

The tragic event occurred in the town of Lumut, a vital naval base in Malaysia, at 9:30 local time (02:30 BST).

Unfortunately, no one from the crash is known to have survived. “All victims were confirmed dead on site and the remains were sent to the [Lumut] Military Hospital for identification,” the Royal Malaysian Navy said in confirming the tragic news.

They have promised to start a thorough inquiry to find out what caused the catastrophe.

According to preliminary accounts, one of the helicopters, a HOM M503-3 with seven people on board, crashed deadly onto a nearby running track. In the meantime, the other aircraft, a three-person Fennec M502-6, crashed into a nearby swimming pool.

Authorities responded quickly to the distress call, notifying the state’s fire and rescue department of the disastrous situation at 09:50 local time (01:50 GMT).

This tragic incident comes after a Malaysian coast guard helicopter had technical difficulties on a training flight off Angsa Island in March. Thankfully, the pilot, co-pilot, and two passengers were found and saved from the wreckage by fishermen.
