Why the role of EAC secretary general is under scrutiny
With the incumbent secretary general, Peter Mathuki, leaving office in ten years, the job has become a hot potato in the East African Community.
The governance structure deficiencies at the EAC Secretariat have been brought to light by the East African Legislative Assembly’s (EALA) intense examination of the secretary general’s office and operations, as well as the increased duties that come with a bigger regional bloc.
The terms of Francis Muthaura (Kenya), the first chief executive of the East African Community (EAC), and his successors Juma Mwapachu (Tanzania), Amanya Mushega (Uganda), and Dr. Richard Sezibera (Rwanda) are in contrast to that of the departing Secretary General Dr. Mathuki (Kenya) and his predecessor Liberat Mfumukeko (Burundi).
