The ruling Junta in Mali has imposed a ban on media outlets reporting on political activities

Mali’s Junta has tightened its hold even more by outlawing media coverage of political parties and associations after temporarily suspending political activity.

The ruling junta in Mali imposed a restriction on media coverage of political parties and associations as part of an increase in control measures. This decision comes after the national political activities were put on hold until further notice the day before.

The instruction spread over social media after being released by Mali’s top communication body. The warning states that all media, including print newspapers, radio, television, and internet platforms, are prohibited.

Since 2020, Mali has had two coups, which have added to the ongoing wave of political unrest in West and Central Africa. At the same time, the country is dealing with an increasingly destructive insurgency carried out by terrorists connected to al-Qaida and the Islamic State organization.

There is still uncertainty around the ban’s scope and application. Many wonders if reporters would still be able to cover subjects like the economics, which is closely related to politics, and if someone will be in charge of their reporting.
