REA and Prisons to Deliver Electricity to Villages in Tanzania
The Rural Energy Agency (REA) and the Prison Service have signed an agreement document for the implementation of the clean energy infrastructure construction program in 129 prisons in mainland Tanzania.
The Director General of REA, Hassan Saidy and the Commissioner General of the Prison Service, Mzee Nyamka signed the document. REA will facilitate the Prison Service in the construction of 126 natural gas systems, the installation of 56 LPG systems, the improvement of the natural gas system in Lilungu – Mtwara prison.
Also, REA will enable the army to purchase 1,147 tons of alternative charcoal and 412 stoves and the purchase of 61 machines to make alternative charcoal from crop residues.
In addition, REA and prisons will also cooperate in the installation of a natural gas system in 93 households in the Keko Prison area, 548 households in the Ukonga Complex area and eight commercial kitchens in the Ukonga area and the provision of capacity building training for 280 Army personnel. of Prisons regarding the operation of clean energy projects.
November 2022, President Samia Suluhu Hassan issued an order to all public institutions that use unclean energy when cooking food for at least 100 people to stop using dirty energy to protect the environment and people’s health.
The Assistant Commissioner of the Prisons Service, Kizito Jaka said the Prisons Service has 129 prisons in all regions of Mainland Tanzania which hold an average of 32,000 prisoners and detainees per day.
