Taiwan earthquake – updates: Survivors say quake left ‘lead-like stones’ as death toll rises

Rescuers are searching for missing people and trying to reach survivors after Taiwan’s worst earthquake in 25 years sent rocks and mud crashing down mountainsides, blocking roads and shaking buildings.

10 people died and more than 1000 people were injured in the 7.4 magnitude earthquake.

struck in the early hours of Wednesday morning, causing students to run outside and families to escape their homes through windows. The ground floors of some buildings collapsed, causing them to lean in the wrong direction.

Authorities did not send the usual warning because they were expecting a small earthquake.

On Thursday, about 200 residents near the epicenter took shelter in makeshift tents following hundreds of aftershocks.

While many workers who could not leave the quarry due to the deterioration of the roads were released, six workers from another quarry were dismissed.

About 700 employees and guests are still trapped at the hotel in the national park, but officials say they are safe and have food and water.
