Egyptian President Sisi to be sworn in for a third term

Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi is set to be sworn in for a third consecutive six-year term as the country’s leader.

He was re-elected in December with 89.6% of the vote, defeating three other candidates.

His swearing-in ceremony will take place Tuesday in the new parliament buildings near the capital, Cairo, state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram reported.

Mr. Sisi, 69, became the president in 2014, a year after he led the army to overthrow his Islamist predecessor Mohammed Morsi.

He is credited with implementing several major infrastructure projects during his tenure but has also been criticized for a tough economy stemming from debt swelling and rampant inflation.

The Egyptian pound has lost more than 50% of its value against the U.S. dollar, triggering a major cost-of-living crisis.

Human rights groups have also accused Mr. Sisi of cracking down on critics.

His new six-years term should be his last, according to the state constitution.
