Brazilian Soccer Star Robinho Begins Serving Nine-Year Sentence For Sexual Assault

Former Brazilian international soccer player Robinho has been detained in Santos, Brazil, to begin serving a nine-year prison sentence for his sexual charge conviction in Italy in 2017.

Robinho, who also spent two years playing for Manchester City, was given a nine-year prison sentence for participation in a group sexual assault of a woman back in 2013 while he was playing for AC Milan. Due to Brazil’s law against extraditing its citizens, Italy asked that he serve his sentence within Brazil.

However, the former soccer player superstar was not once arrested, as he left the country before the final judgement. He also refuses any illegal behavior.

Robinho, 40, was taken into detention at his residence located in his hometown of Santos on Thursday night.

On Wednesday, the decision by Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice was made with a 9-2 vote to sustain the Italian court’s verdict.
