The UN announces sanctions against rebel leaders in DR Congo

The United Nations has announced restrictions on the purchase of weapons, transportation and the seizure of property owned by six leaders associated with rebel groups in the DRC.

This action comes at a time when fighting continues to be reported in the east of the country.

Among those sanctioned are the spokesperson of the M23 rebels, one general from the (FDLR) group and two high-level officers of the ADF group in Uganda.

Others who were highlighted the sanctions are from the Mai-Mai rebel groups and the commander of the Twirwaneho group.

This action has come after the meeting of the security council in the United Nations on Jummane to discuss the issue of security in the east of the DRC.

The rebels of M23 and FDLR have been accused due to the conflict between the government of DRC and that of Kigali.

DR Congo accuses Kigali of supporting the M23 rebels while Rwanda accuses Kinshasa of collaborating with the FDLR rebels linked to the 1994 genocide.

During a meeting of the UN security council this week, the M23 rebels were criticized for their latest move to threaten the city of Sake, a move that has caused thousands of civilians to flee their homes.:
