Russia: Alexei Navalny, a critic of President Putin, has died in prison

The main opposition leader in Russia, Alexei Navalny, has died while in prison, according to reports from prison officials where he was imprisoned.

Reports from the prison service said Navalny suddenly felt ill after a walk on Friday and lost consciousness, and efforts to free him were unsuccessful. In addition, officials in Russia say they are investigating to find out what killed the famous opposition politician.

Last year, he was transferred to the Arctic prison, believed to be the highest security in the Siberian province. However, the charges against the politician have been believed to be politically motivated because of his criticism of President Vladimir Putin.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called Navalny, he has experienced his courage to lose his life, while NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said there are many questions about the politician’s death. Navalny, once escaped death after being poisoned but was treated in Germany and later decided to return to Russia when he was arrested in Moscow.
